Our year 2010 has begun.

24th February - Social Evening at The Seal in Woodbridge 12 members enjoyed time together over supper sharing news and views prior to our AAM.

28th February – Our Annual Area Meeting was attended by 33 Members, in Kirtling Village Hall.  This venue seems obscure and hard to find, but is actually very straight forward from the Newmarket clock tower through Saxon Street to Kirtling.  The  facilities are excellent and the hire fee very reasonable.  Photos of the past 3 years’ activities were played through a large screen as folks arrived and enjoyed a chat over coffee or bought and sold items from the table top sale. The Business Meeting was very informative going through last years’ events and members’ achievements, with an update of this year’s calendar dates on the back of the agenda.  Details of The Weekend Drives at Rudham Grange in Norfolk 17th/18th April were explained, a booking form is available from AC.  Gordon Marks talked about this year’s Attelage at Helmingham.  Please Note the Date is 14th/15th August.

Please contact  AC or Gordon for an information pack and booking form.

The Area 24 finances were explained, a copy is available from AC.

The meeting closed at 11.45am.  Lunch was followed by Sallie Walrond expertly playing her Piano Accordion and entertaining us with a “Spot the Tune” Quiz.  She gave a box of Chocolates to the winning table.  Thank you Sallie!  I must also thank everyone for bringing a wonderful variety of contributions to the lunch table, providing a delicious meal.  Most of all, I was overwhelmed by the taking over and organisation of the domestic arrangements and the physical aid provided by all present in clearing up after the meeting.   This was much appreciated.  Thank You.

Road Driving Assessment
Martin Bradshaw (Lincs area)
Stephanie Walmsley (Essex area)
Jacquie Dixon (Cambs) and young driver Chelsey Bailey (Cambs)

Chelsey was the winner of the Junior Scholorship at Swingletree and spent a few days with me in October training towards her assessments in the mornings and training for her first indoor competition in the afternoons. She went on to come 2nd out of nine at tne November Forest Edge event. Not bad for someone that had only driven donkeys before!

BDS Preliminary level
This was obtained by all the above except Martin (he only started driving in September!!)

10th October .

The Charity Drive
on the Thurlow Estate by kind permission of Robert Clifton Brown raised £200 with a further £200 from the sale of raffle tickets in aid of Spinal Research. Incidentally Fiona Powell won first prize a WOW saddle worth almost £2000.

Thanks to evryone who supported Claire Bourne for this event.

Saturday 28th November:

At Tye Farm, Willisham, Derek and Sharon Wootton kindly gave three members with their equines some valuable pre-season tuition, with four more members looking on and lending a helping hand.  Jean and Patrick provided a snack lunch afterwards, when the mornings work and other topics were discussed.  Many thanks to all concerned.

Sunday 20th December.

Owing to excess Snow only John & Eileen Snowdon, Kate & Jessiie Bowling, Wally & Eunice Binder and Kate Cooper managed to join Jean Clayden and Patrick at Tye Farm, Willisham for the Sunday lunch buffet.  This was very enjoyable occasion and a good opportunity to bond members and exchange news and views.

Many thanks for the wonderful hospitality.

Saturday 10th October. Thurlow Drive

Members appreciated the mainly of-road drive on an estate at Thurlow by kind invitation of Robert Clifton Brown which was organised by Claire Bourne.

Robert drove his pair of Hungarian greys first, followed at a distance by six other turnouts. Claire put her two Cobs and two Friesians together as a team for the first time in public, going last. There was a choice of distance shown on the maps provided.  It is always enjoyable to view new areas of countyside from the privilage of private land.  Thank you!

Sunday 11th October. Blandings Farm Inside-Out

Louise Garget put on an Inside-Out Event at Blandings Farm near Newmarket.  This is good way to do a dressage test of your choice, a cones course with a difference. (Drive as many cones clear as you can in 5 minutes.) A mini marathon in the afternoon consists of a trotting circuit, 3 flagged obstacles, the circuit and obstacles again.
This is a fun competition for the inexperienced and those of us who cannot cope with full blown driving trials but like having a go.  Very enjoyable, Louise.  This type of event is valuable as an introduction to Driving Trials and also adds spice to normal BDS drives.

9th August. BDS Trec at Blandings,

BDS Trec at Blandings, run by Elaine and Clare McCarthy was a pleasant and relaxed occasion for the members.  The timed drive was off road and the skills were varied and interesting.

20th September. drives at Wantisden Hall Farms.

Vanessa Francis arranged a two loop choice of drives at Wantisden Hall Farms.  3 miles round an ancient oak woodland with swans on the lake and Red and Fallow deer in the woods.  The 6 miles round the farmland tracks and local road was also very enjoyable.  On our return Vanessa and Jane Hughes produced delicious cakes. Great with a welcome cup of tea.  Vanessa  has been helping Jane bring on her new pony Niggy who was out for the first time in company.  She accepted meeting other turnouts and the Red deer on her trip round the woods.  David and Hazel Moyes had to drive their Welsh Cob, Zar, from home after their horse box developed a fault.  John and Eileen Snowdon brought three Shetlands, Baron and Shandy for Eleanour and Abi to drive and Earl who was given a run round by Vanessa to de-steam before John took over. It was a lovely drive in perfect weather for the other four turnouts to enjoy.

27th September.  Traditional Drive and Fun -day at Easton Farm Park.

Nine turnouts arrived in glorious sunshine and were given Maps for a choice of routes to The New Bell Inn at Cretingham for a drink before lunch.  See Photos. Wally drove the only Traditional, Ralli Car, but everyone had dressed up and all were well presented for the drive.  Cones were available for a play on the return to Easton before a delicious Communal Lunch.  Everyone was so enjoying relaxing in the sunshine with a cup of tea, we did not have a cones competition this year, as it was time to pack up and go home.  Jane Hughes furthered Niggy's education by doing her own 2mile drive passed Letheringham watermill with her daughter as groom and then going gently through the cones on their return. E.B.

Attelage report.
July 26th 2009

The Concours d’Attelage de Tradition held at Helmingham Hall on 26th July was a triumph.  This competition from France is a very social occasion with everyone in harness together and all the disciplines following on.  Times were given for Presentation, then batches of 4 or 5 paraded in the ring to be introduced to the spectators before leaving at 2min intervals for a road drive.  A refreshment stop at the  Framsden Doberman enabled some relaxation while drinks were served to all competitors.   The procession back to Helmingham was led by Steve and Liz Jarman with their Post Chaise, Liz riding Postillion with Ring-guard Alan Bowen horn-blowing through the villages.  The competitors followed at intervals and on arrival at Helmingham Hall took part in a few skills tests judged by David Baker.  These were followed by individual shows in the ring heralded by Alan the Ring guard with Angela Sixsmith commentating to the spectators about each turnout and the explaining the rules of the competition.  Everyone then returned for the Prizegiving.

Taking part were Suffolk members: Wallace Binder – Country Ralli Car, Vanessa Francis Gig, Esme Millen - Basket Gig, John Snowdon – Fenix Dog Cart & Jessie Bowling – Gig.  Essex Members: Eunice Hopton - Milk Float, Anthony Martin - Butchers Cart.  Herts Member Edward Smith – Stanhope Phaeton. Beds Members Tim Wood – Wagonette Omnibus (with eight passengers including delightful children wearing bonnets) and Steve & Liz Jarman – Post Chaise.  Stephanie Malone from Kent – Dennett Gig, Janice Clough from South Yorkshire – Spider Phaeton and Chris Van Reen from Oxford - Fenix Dog Cart.

The Area 24 Perpetual “Attelage de Tradition “Trophy ( A Driving Cob bronze bust sculptured and donated by Jane Marshall) was awarded to Chris Van Reen.

There were other special awards and commemorative rosettes for everyone.

Gordon Marks and I had worked out the format of the day but it was thanks to the splendid team of Stewards and Judge Caroline Dale-Leech, who made it all run smoothly.  We celebrated afterwards with a party and toasted Gordon Marks with best wishes as he sadly missed the occasion due to an accident at home.

The whole event was by invitation of Lord and Lady Tollemache in association with the Suffolk Punch Trust to provide an exhibit for their Suffolk Horse Open Day.

They were delighted with the spectacle and I do thank everyone who came with their splendid Carriages to make it such a special occasion.  The only problem is, when and where will the next one be.  The Trophy must be won again!

The editor of Inharness magazine,Fiona Powell experienced all the excitement and was taken to the Doberman in the Post-Chaise.

East Anglian Area Show 2009

Organisers of the show very much appreciated the number of quality Turnouts, from local and far away counties.  Despite the uncertain weather everyone pulled together for a day of pleasure and good sportsmanhip.  It was a spectacular Show.

Judges: Martin Atkinson and Angela Sixsmith judged a total of 69 class entries  between them in 2 rings. All ran smoothly, thanks to the adaptability and attention of the stewards.  Jean Clayden kept everyone informed on the PA system, calling up the entries for each class, 16 in all with 3 championships.

The Private Driving Championship was hotly contested, between Liz Edmonds who won both her classes with Parkton Unique; Tessa Reeves winner of the Multiples with Thankyou Ovation and Thankyou Oh Wow;  Eddie Smith second in Open Hackneys with Baldwins John Boy;  Jeff Osborne who won Country Turnout with The Poacher; Jessie Apicella who won the Novice and Open Hackney with her new pony Brookfield Showtime.  The Judge chose - Champion: Jeff Osborne and Reserve Champion: Jessie Apicella.

Karen Cromack who won two classes with her Welsh Sec Temple Druid Boltwood.  Karen also won the Points Champion Trophy by 1 point from John Snowdon, last year’s winner.

Sharon Wootton driving Ellarslea Hallmark, winner of the Ride & Drive class  and Hazel Moyes driving Brimstone the Zar, winner of the Pleasure Driving Championship.

Cambridgeshire County Show 2009

8 turnouts were forward for the two classes at the Cambridgeshire County Show.  All turnouts enjoyed a lovely drive on the National Trust Wimpole Hall Estate in glorious sunshine.  Judge Cyndy Moreau had her work cut out as all the turnouts were of a high standard but she found her winners.  In the exercise class Lynne Anderson with Whitethorns Tradesman took the red rosette, and in the traditional class Neil Winney took the red rosette with Glanvyrnwy Prince of Wales. (See below) All competitors completing the classes were awarded a Fenix Red Rover drive rosette.
